FBR Rules Out Extension of September 30 Tax Return Filing Deadline

The Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR) has officially dismissed the possibility of extending the September 30 deadline for filing tax returns, a departure from its usual practice of offering extensions in recent years. FBR spokesperson Bakhtiar Muhammad confirmed that no general extension will be provided this time, emphasizing that September 30 will remain the final date for all filers. In prior years, the deadline was extended, including last year when it was pushed to October 31.

This decision aligns with the government’s goal to expand the tax base and increase revenue collection amid pressing economic challenges. The incumbent administration, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, passed a tax-heavy budget in June to meet the requirements of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and any leniency in tax filings may hinder efforts to meet ambitious revenue targets.

The FBR acknowledges that some individuals may face challenges in meeting the deadline. Those unable to file by September 30 can request an individual extension from their respective tax commissioners as allowed by law. However, this provision will not result in a blanket extension for all taxpayers.

In a bid to clamp down on tax evasion, the FBR is considering severe penalties for non-filers and under-filers. Penalties may include fines up to Rs1 million, freezing of bank accounts, and restrictions on property and vehicle purchases. The tax authority is also exploring additional enforcement measures, including outsourcing audits for high-net-worth individuals (HNWs) and companies to ensure greater compliance.
