The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has introduced a streamlined process allowing freelancers without static IP addresses to register virtual private networks (VPNs) using their mobile numbers.
In a statement on Saturday, the PTA emphasized that this move aims to simplify VPN registration and support the IT industry. Over 31,000 VPNs have already been registered through the regulatory body, which advised users to visit its website to complete the mobile-based registration process.
This development follows security concerns raised by the government, prompting the PTA to announce a crackdown on unregistered VPNs. Although the original registration deadline was set for November 30, the PTA later extended it, allowing additional time for compliance.
The Ministry of Interior initially planned to shut down unregistered VPNs by mid-November but granted a two-week grace period. PTA Chairman Maj Gen (Retd) Hafeez Ur Rehman confirmed that the government opted not to block VPNs immediately, extending the registration timeline further.
VPNs, widely used for bypassing content restrictions and ensuring online privacy, have seen a surge in popularity in Pakistan, especially after the government restricted access to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) citing national security concerns.
The IT industry and freelancers had been advocating for an extension to the registration deadline, highlighting the critical role of VPNs in their work. The PTA stressed that the registration process is essential for improving cybersecurity and protecting national data.
VPN Registration Process
To register a VPN, users must fill out an online form providing details such as their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC), company registration information, and taxpayer status. Freelancers are required to submit documentation confirming their project or company affiliation.
Applicants must also provide an IP address for VPN connectivity. If a fixed IP address is needed, it can be obtained through an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
This mobile-based registration initiative is expected to enhance accessibility while ensuring compliance with national security and data protection regulations.
