From the last weeks, Pakistan has been experienced with an immense change in the weather. Generally, May is known for the extreme heat before the monsoon rains but hit by the unexpected hailstorms, thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. This dramatic change in the weather were mostly seen in the Federal i.e. Islamabad and the nearby areas that affect the daily life badly.
In May 2025, Islamabad is hotter as compared to the previous years in the 5th month. In the current year, the average temperature reached about 29 oC that is higher than the temperatures of 2024 and 2023. In the year 2020, the average temperature was 28 °C. It has been seen an increase of 1oC just in five years. This is an alarming and hilarious condition for Pakistan. The main reason for this condition is climate change which makes the world hotter with time.
Another main reason is the globalization that happens in the bigger cities like Islamabad, where buildings and roads are greater in number but trees or green areas are in short in numbers. Such initiatives make the cities more polluted. The heatwave also started earlier this year as compared to the previous ones. Overall, this climate change is happening due to deforestation, industrialization and urbanization.
People were surprised and unprepared for such strong and continuous storms. Streets were flooded, traffic was blocked and people living in the low-lying areas faced the water in their houses. The hailstorms destroyed the crops in the surrounding areas and affected the farmers badly. Many trees were uprooted and the strong wind damaged the power lines leading to electricity outages in different areas. In the mid of April, the hailstorm affected the automobiles i.e., cars badly. Further, the people bore this change in the shape of broken solar plates.
These sudden and hilarious weather changes are not just one time; they indicate climate change. From different years, environmentalists and scientists have stated that Pakistan is one of the most vulnerable countries affected by climate change. Successive increases in the temperature, melting of the glaciers and changes in the rainfall patterns are becoming the most visible and impactful. The weather in May 2025 shows that climate change is not a future threat; it has already come and disturbed our lives badly.
The unexpected storms in May are a wake-up call. It’s time to understand that the climate is changing and we must change ourselves to make the environment sustainable. To tackle this issue, we need to take many initiatives. The government and environmental agencies along with other people need to take seriously to tackle this issue. It is needed to grow more trees and create green spaces to keep the environment cooler.
People should be informed about how to keep their environment sustainable. Also, the government should run awareness campaigns to protect the environment. Strict rules and regulations are much needed for this. Planting more trees, reducing pollution, saving water and shifting towards renewable energy sources are important steps to mitigate this effect. It is also needed to adopt the latest technology or artificial intelligence to mitigate this issue.
