Govt Hikes Fixed Gas Charges for Domestic Consumers from July 1

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has officially notified an increase in fixed monthly gas charges for both protected and non-protected domestic consumers, effective July 1, 2025, as part of its broader revenue adjustment plan.

According to the notification issued Friday, protected domestic consumers—those who use limited volumes of gas—will now pay Rs600 per month, up from Rs400, reflecting a Rs200 increase. These consumers, largely from low-income households, had previously been shielded from major tariff hikes.

Non-protected consumers, however, face steeper increases. Those consuming up to 1.5 hm³ will now pay Rs1,500 per month, compared to the previous Rs1,000, while users consuming more than 1.5 hm³ will see their fixed monthly charges rise to Rs3,000, up from Rs2,000.

Additionally, all domestic consumers will continue to pay Rs40 per month as meter rent, the notification confirmed.

Tariff Hikes for Bulk and Industrial Sectors

The notification also included tariff adjustments for bulk and industrial users:

  • Bulk consumers will now pay Rs3,175 per MMBtu, up Rs275 from the previous Rs2,900.

  • Gas supply to the power sector has been revised upward by Rs175 per MMBtu, reaching Rs1,225, from Rs1,050.

  • General industry (processing) will face a Rs150 increase, raising the rate from Rs2,150 to Rs2,300 per MMBtu.

No Change for Key Sectors

Tariffs for captive power plants, cement, commercial, CNG, and fertilizer sectors remain unchanged under the new pricing structure.

The price revision comes amid rising concerns over the country’s circular debt and pressure from international lenders for energy sector reforms, including better cost recovery and reduced subsidies.
