Govt moves to transform Karachi Port into regional trade hub

Imran Zakir

KARACHI: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming Karachi Port into a leading regional trade hub through reforms, modernization, and improved facilitation.
He noted significant progress in dredging, transshipment, bunkering, and terminal optimization, strengthening Pakistan’s maritime position. Over 100 vessels have recently been serviced through expanded bunkering operations, while the shift to direct marine fuel supply is expected to boost the refining sector.
Chairman Karachi Port Trust, Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed (Retd), highlighted ongoing dredging operations with four dredgers, including channel deepening to accommodate larger vessels. A key milestone includes the $6 million SAPTL channel project.
The Minister also shared that 99% of transshipment-related issues were resolved within 40 days, enabling smooth cargo handling. Following regional disruptions, Karachi Port successfully managed major transshipment activity, signaling its growing global relevance.
With reduced charges, new feeder services, and enhanced storage capacity, these initiatives are expected to accelerate trade growth and position Karachi as a major maritime gateway.
