Govt Will Not Discourage Solarisation: PM Shehbaz

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to promoting solar energy, calling it the cheapest source of electricity globally and essential for Pakistan’s energy future.

Speaking at the launch of the “Apna Meter, Apni Reading” Power Smart Mobile App, aimed at ensuring greater transparency in electricity billing, the premier said Pakistan was among the few countries witnessing rapid solarisation, and the government would not take any steps to hinder the process.

He also announced the abolition of the Rs35 Pakistan Television (PTV) fee from electricity bills to provide relief to consumers.

The newly launched mobile app, available in five regional languages, is expected to help curb overbilling and promote transparency across the power sector. Shehbaz directed that the app be rolled out for every household from Peshawar to Karachi.

Highlighting broader reforms in the power sector, the prime minister said his administration was focused on:

  • Revamping DISCOS boards

  • Ensuring merit-based appointments

  • Cracking down on corrupt practices

He added that the government had held successful talks with banks to address the circular debt crisis, which he termed a “big achievement.”

Power theft remains a major challenge, Shehbaz noted, causing a loss of Rs500 billion annually. He said the Ministry of Power was working around the clock to address the issue.

Minister for Power Division, Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, also spoke on the occasion, emphasizing that modern technology and digital tools like the app were essential to improve transparency and resolve issues such as overbilling.

Shehbaz Meets Chaudhry Nisar, Invites Him to Rejoin PMLN

In a significant political development, PM Shehbaz also paid a courtesy visit to his longtime friend and former party stalwart Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan at his residence.

The meeting, described as cordial, included Chaudhry Taimur Ali Khan, Nisar’s son. According to sources, the prime minister invited Nisar to rejoin the PMLN, to which Nisar responded that he would consult his close associates before making any decision.

Nisar parted ways with the PMLN in June 2018, citing differences over the distribution of party tickets for the general elections. Though he lost the National Assembly race, he secured a provincial assembly seat and contested the 2024 elections as an independent candidate.

He last served as Interior Minister under the PMLN government from 2013 to 2017.
