Shanghai, a city renowned for its vibrant urban landscape, is also home to tranquil and scenic villages that offer a glimpse into China’s deep-rooted cultural heritage. Our recent journey to Humin Village in Shanghai’s Fengxian District promised an enriching experience, despite the unexpected twist of weather that added a unique charm to the trip.
A Rainy Beginning
Our day began with a delightful visit of the Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and then lunch at Makan Restaurant, known for its fusion of local and international cuisines. As we stepped out, rain droplets started to patter gently on the pavement. Within moments, the light drizzle transformed into a continuous, heavy downpour. The sudden change in weather, far from dampening our spirits, only heightened the anticipation of our visit to Humin Village, which was located about an hour and a half drive away from central Shanghai. This journey, which we initially thought would be a simple excursion, turned into an adventure filled with unexpected experiences.
The Drive to Humin Village
The rain cascaded against the windows of our bus, forming streams of water that created a blurred view of the cityscape. As we drove towards Humin Village, the weather turned the usually sunlit route into a misty, atmospheric road. The heavy rain painted the landscape in shades of gray, making everything look surreal and mysterious. The downpour accompanied us throughout the journey, making it a quintessential rainy day adventure.
Despite the inclement weather, our group remained upbeat, eager to explore what the village had in store. The rain provided a serene backdrop, washing over the greenery and traditional homes we passed along the way. The anticipation grew as we approached our destination, and we couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement mixed with curiosity.
A Warm Welcome at Humin Village
Upon our arrival at Humin Village, we were greeted by Gong Lianghua, the first secretary stationed in Humin Village, appointed by the Shanghai Municipal Government. Gong Lianghua welcomed us with warmth and hospitality, offering a detailed briefing about the village, which boasts a population of around 2500 people. He explained that Humin Village, apart from its residential area, also includes a well-developed industrial zone, contributing significantly to the local economy.
Despite the ongoing rain, the secretary’s enthusiasm and dedication were evident. He painted a vivid picture of the village’s development, highlighting its modern facilities and the industrious spirit of its residents. His briefing set the tone for our visit, as we learned about the village’s journey from a traditional settlement to a thriving community that balances industry and culture.
Exploring the Village amidst Heavy Rain
After the informative briefing, we boarded a shuttle bus for a tour of Humin Village. The bus’s windows quickly fogged up due to the heavy rain, adding a cozy, intimate feel to the ride. The rain drummed against the roof, creating a soothing rhythm that complemented the tranquil atmosphere of the village.
The rain-soaked landscape of Humin Village was mesmerizing. The traditional houses, with their gray-tiled roofs slick with water, glistened under the overcast sky. Normally bustling with activity, the streets were quieter, exuding a serene and almost ethereal atmosphere. The rain seemed to amplify the beauty of the village, making it feel like a scene straight out of an ancient Chinese painting.
Our first stop was a local nursery, renowned for its wide variety of plants. Thousands of different plants were on display, each more vibrant than the next, their leaves sparkling with raindrops. The nursery, usually bustling with gardeners and visitors, was quieter due to the weather, allowing us to take in the beauty of the flora in peaceful solitude. The rain added a fresh, earthy scent to the air, enhancing the sensory experience of the visit.
The Display Hall: A Showcase of Humin Village’s Heritage
The next stop on our rainy day tour was the village’s display hall, a space dedicated to showcasing the cultural and artistic heritage of Humin Village. Despite the heavy rain, we made our way into the hall, where we were greeted by a fascinating array of relics, gift items, customized giveaways, and an impressive collection of crockery. Each item on display told a story of the village’s rich history and traditions.
The display hall was a treasure trove of local craftsmanship, with beautifully designed porcelain pieces and intricate handmade artifacts. The heavy rain outside only seemed to heighten the cozy, welcoming atmosphere inside. The sound of the rain drumming against the roof was a constant reminder of the weather, but it added a layer of comfort, making the hall feel like a safe haven filled with the warmth of cultural pride.
Many of the items on display were available for purchase, providing us with an opportunity to take home a piece of Humin Village’s unique heritage. The artisans who crafted these items were clearly skilled, and it was easy to see why these products were popular among both locals and visitors.
Concluding the Visit
After exploring the display hall, we made our way back to the briefing hall, retracing our steps through the rain-soaked village streets. The rain had not let up; if anything, it seemed to have intensified, creating a dramatic curtain of water around us. Yet, the downpour did little to dampen our spirits. The visit had been a memorable journey into the heart of Humin Village, showcasing its charm and resilience.
Back at the briefing hall, our group expressed gratitude for the hospitality shown by Secretary Gong Lianghua and the local community. As a gesture of appreciation, we presented a Jinnah Cap and a special edition of The Financial Daily, a publication commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party of China (CPC). This special edition featured 100 quotes from President Xi Jinping, highlighting his vision and leadership. The gesture was warmly received, symbolizing a bridge of friendship and cultural exchange between our media group and the local community.
Reflections on a Rainy Day Adventure
Our visit to Humin Village may have been accompanied by heavy rain, but the experience was far from dampened. In fact, the weather added a unique layer to the journey, making it a day to remember. The rain brought out a different side of the village, one that we might not have seen on a sunny day. It gave the entire experience an almost cinematic quality, turning our exploration into a serene, reflective journey.
Despite the challenges posed by the rain, we left Humin Village with a deep appreciation for its rich cultural heritage and the dedication of its local leaders. The rain, rather than being a hindrance, became a companion on our journey, enriching the experience and making the visit to Humin Village truly unforgettable.
In the end, our rainy day exploration of Fengxian District was not just a visit to a village but a journey into the heart of a community that embraces its history while looking forward to the future. It was a testament to the enduring spirit of Humin Village, where tradition and progress go hand in hand, even under the grayest of skies.
