Imran Khan Voices Support for Justice Mansoor Ali Shah as Next Chief Justice

Imran Khan, the imprisoned leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has declared his party’s full support for Supreme Court Justice Mansoor Ali Shah to be appointed as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan.

Speaking informally to journalists from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail on Wednesday, the former prime minister urged the prompt announcement of the new Chief Justice, expressing confidence in Justice Shah’s potential to uphold judicial integrity. “We fully back Justice Mansoor Ali Shah for the role,” Khan emphasized.

Khan went on to criticize the government’s approach towards the judiciary, claiming that the administration seeks to undermine judicial independence. He stated, “The aim of establishing a constitutional court is to diminish the authority of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and the government is determined to destroy the judiciary.” He also accused the current regime of attempting to install judges favorable to them, especially in light of the 2024 elections. Khan argued that these actions are part of a broader effort to prevent PTI’s resurgence.

Court Sets Final Deadline for Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi’s Legal Team

In a separate legal matter, a Special Accountability Court gave a final warning to the legal team representing Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the £190 million case. The hearing, held at Adiala Jail, was adjourned due to the absence of Bushra’s lawyer, Usman Gul, who was reportedly suffering from dengue.

Judge Nasir Javed Rana set the next court date for Friday, instructing the defense team to complete the cross-examination of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) investigation officer at the upcoming session. The NAB lawyers pointed out that despite Bushra having four attorneys, none stepped in to proceed with the case. They also reminded the court that the defense had previously secured an order from the Islamabad High Court to continue the trial, yet were now causing delays.

The court emphasized that this was the final chance for the defense to conduct the necessary cross-examination in the next hearing.
