Inquiry Clears Pakistani Rice Exports of GMO Contamination

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSR) has strongly denied allegations regarding the cultivation of genetically modified organisms (GMO) rice in Pakistan, dismissing recent media reports as unfounded.

The controversy arose following a Rapid Alert Notification from the European Union (EU) via the EU-Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) on August 2, 2024. In response, the Department of Plant Protection (DPP), a division of MNFSR, launched an in-depth inquiry into the matter.

The investigation, which focused on the rice value chain, included testing rice samples for GMO traces. Key findings from the inquiry are as follows:

  • Lab Reports Confirm Non-GMO Compliance: Samples from rice processing units and seed stock were tested at both national and internationally accredited laboratories, including Eurofins and the National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE) in Faisalabad. All results confirmed that Pakistani rice production and export consignments are GMO-free.
  • Source of Alleged Contamination: The flagged organic rice consignment was repacked and re-exported by a Dutch company. Subsequent testing in Germany indicated that cross-contamination likely occurred during repacking, marketing, or sampling processes rather than in Pakistan.
  • Adherence to Standards: Pakistan’s rice production and export systems strictly comply with non-GMO standards, reaffirming the integrity of the country’s agricultural practices.

The MNFSR highlighted its commitment to international food safety and phytosanitary standards, stating that the matter has been taken up with EU authorities to seek clarity on testing processes and potential contamination points during repacking or marketing.

The Ministry reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to maintaining its global reputation as a supplier of premium-quality, GMO-free rice.
