K-Electric to charge Rs0.4/unit extra from consumers

Karachi’s K-Electric consumers will see an additional Rs0.4013 per unit in their January 2025 bills as part of the Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) for August 2024, authorized by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra). This adjustment will enable K-Electric to collect Rs674 million in one month from its customers. With the 18% GST, the total cost to consumers will reach Rs795 million.

This increase applies to most consumer categories, except Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS), lifeline consumers, and prepaid metering customers. K-Electric had initially requested Rs0.51 per unit, but Nepra approved Rs0.4013 per unit after a public hearing and a review of the utility’s data.

Additionally, consumers experienced an increase of Rs3.0362 per unit in December for May 2024 FCA, impacting them by Rs6.105 billion. K-Electric was previously permitted to charge Rs2.5934 per unit in October and Rs3.1688 in November due to adjustments for May and June 2024.

In a recent move, K-Electric filed a petition with Nepra to refund Rs0.16 per unit to customers for September 2024’s FCA, marking a notable shift as it aims to return Rs247 million to consumers.
