India’s 78th Independence Day has been marked as a ‘Black Day’ by Kashmiris in the occupied Jammu and Kashmir valley, as well as those living in Pakistan and around the world. The observance comes in protest against New Delhi’s ongoing occupation of their homeland.
Leaders of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), currently imprisoned in India’s Tihar Jail, have urged Kashmiris to use the day to send a strong message rejecting India’s occupation and demanding the right to self-determination. They called on the global community to pressurize India into granting Kashmiris their basic rights.
The Kashmiri leaders emphasized their commitment to continue the struggle for a plebiscite, stating, “India has no legal or ethical right to celebrate its freedom in the occupied Kashmir. India’s occupation of Kashmir is a clear violation of the UN resolutions and international laws.”
In response, Indian authorities have intensified restrictions across the Illegally Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) on the eve of Independence Day.
In Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Kashmiri refugees staged a protest against India at Azadi Chowk. The day was further marked by anti-India rallies and demonstrations in various cities and towns on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC).
Organizers of the Black Day events stated that participants in the protest rallies would wear black armbands as a symbol of their disdain for India’s actions in Kashmir.
