Key Decisions Needed on Champions Cup

The ICC has officially relocated the ninth edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The tournament will be held in Dubai and Sharjah from October 3 to 20, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) retaining its hosting rights.

Reasons for the Move:
– Political Instability: Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country earlier this month amid protests. An interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has taken over, leading to the relocation of the event.
– Travel Advisories: Concerns from the governments of participating teams about travel safety made it impractical to host the tournament in Bangladesh at this time.

ICC’s Response:
– Acknowledge BCB Efforts: ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice praised the BCB for its efforts to host the event and expressed regret over the relocation.
– Future Hosting Rights: The BCB will keep hosting rights for future ICC events, with a commitment to bring an ICC global event to Bangladesh soon.
– Thanking Other Boards: Appreciation was extended to the Emirates Cricket Board for stepping in, as well as to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their support, with plans for ICC events in those countries in 2026.

UAE’s Role:
– Significant Hub: The UAE has become a central venue for cricket, hosting numerous qualifiers and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021, alongside Oman.

The decision underscores the need for strategic planning and flexibility in hosting major international sports events amidst global uncertainties.
