Mounir Nasraoui, the father of Barcelona and Spain’s star winger Lamine Yamal, was stabbed late Wednesday in a parking lot in Mataro, a town in northeastern Spain, according to a report by La Vanguardia, which cited official sources.
Reuters was unable to independently verify the report, and both the regional Mossos d’Esquadra police and a spokesperson for Mataro’s local government did not respond to requests for comment.
La Vanguardia reported that Nasraoui was taken to Can Ruti hospital in Badalona, where his condition was described as “serious.” Local and regional police have reportedly identified several witnesses to the incident.
However, a later report by the sports website Relevo, also citing official sources, stated that Nasraoui had been discharged from the hospital and returned home.
Lamine Yamal, considered a soccer prodigy, grew up in Mataro, a working-class, multi-ethnic suburb of Barcelona. He emerged as a breakout star during the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany, where he played a key role in Spain’s victory, scoring against France in the semifinal on July 9.
