ISLAMABAD: A massive terror plot targeting the Pakistan Air Force’s Masroor Airbase in Karachi was successfully thwarted by one of Pakistan’s leading intelligence agencies, according to senior security officials.
The foiled attack, described as one of the most serious threats in recent years, was allegedly orchestrated by Fitna al-Khawarij (FAK) — a terror group based in Afghanistan. Intelligence sources revealed that the planned assault involved nine highly trained militants, including five Afghan nationals, and was led by a high-ranking FAK commander known for overseeing the group’s suicide operations.
Thirteen-Month Plot Aimed at Strategic Seizure
The terrorists had infiltrated Pakistan from Afghanistan and rented accommodation near the Masroor Airbase. Their meticulously crafted plan included breaching the base at a vulnerable point, seizing control, destroying key aircraft and installations, and engaging in a prolonged standoff.
According to sources, the operation was in planning for over thirteen months and was being monitored from across the border by FAK’s top leadership.
Swift, Covert Operation Thwarts Final Attack Phase
Pakistan’s intelligence agencies, closely tracking the group’s movement, initiated a covert, coordinated crackdown just as the militants were preparing to launch the final stage of their mission. The suspects were arrested from multiple locations across the country in a preemptive operation hailed by security experts as a major victory.
Link to Past Attacks and Hostile Intelligence Agencies
Authorities believe the captured FAK commander is the mastermind of the November 2024 attack on Chinese engineers at Liberty Textile Mills in Karachi’s SITE area. He is also reported to be an IED expert, trained in Afghanistan and a former militant with the Afghan Taliban during their insurgency against NATO and ISAF forces.
Initial interrogations point to the involvement of hostile foreign intelligence agencies, allegedly providing financial and logistical support to FAK with the aim of destabilising Pakistan. The foiled plot bears similarities to a disrupted terror attempt last October targeting an international diplomatic event in Islamabad.
Nation’s Security Forces Remain on High Alert
Officials emphasized that despite repeated attempts by foreign-backed elements to spread chaos, Pakistan’s armed forces, intelligence agencies, and law enforcement remain united and resolute in their mission to defend the country.
“This successful operation not only averted a catastrophic attack but also dismantled a critical terror network operating inside Pakistan,” an official noted.
Security agencies have vowed to continue their pursuit of remaining operatives and collaborators, reaffirming their commitment to national security and counterterrorism efforts.
