Karachi police have arrested a 40-year-old man suspected of desecrating a grave and sexually abusing the body of a recently buried woman in Korangi’s Bagh-i-Korangi graveyard.
The Awami Colony police registered a case against the accused based on a complaint filed by the son of the deceased woman. The charges include trespassing on burial grounds, rape, and assault or criminal force with intent to outrage a woman’s modesty under sections 297, 376, and 354 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
According to the FIR, the complainant buried his mother on Thursday evening. Later that night, around 10:30 pm, he was informed that the suspect had disturbed the grave and violated the corpse. Local residents apprehended the man, assaulted him, and handed him over to the police.
Korangi police later confirmed the arrest of the suspect on charges of rape. During interrogation, the suspect confessed to monitoring female burials and returning at night to commit the crime. He also admitted to desecrating the graves of four other women.
The suspect was previously apprehended eight years ago for similar offenses in a Korangi graveyard.
Police Surgeon Summaiya Syed confirmed that the suspect was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a medical examination. She added that the family of the deceased had reburied the body, and the police would need judicial approval to exhume the remains for further investigation.
