The rise of professional militaries in the world is credited with accelerating the process of creating the modern nation state. Plus defending the state from external threats, professional armed forces performed internal security, public safety, & administrative functions that helped to establish the legitimacy of its sovereignty.
National sovereignty was reserved for the people. The government’s armed forces, like all of the other instruments of national power, were to be servants of the people & this concept is foundational to the roles, missions, and actions of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) past, present, and future.
PLA It consists of four services Ground Force, Navy, Air Force, Rocket Force and its four arms Aerospace Force, Cyberspace Force, Information Support Force, & Joint Logistics Support Force. It is led by the Central Military Commission with its chairman as commander-in-chief.
The PLA is the world’s largest military force & has the second largest defense budget in the world.
The PLA Since 1949, the PLA has used nine different military strategies, which it calls “strategic guidelines”. Paramilitary People’s Armed Police have the largest delegation in the National People’s Congress.
The PLA is not a traditional nation state military. It is a part, and the armed wing, of the CCP and controlled by the party, not by the state.
It is one of the fastest modernizing militaries in the world, as a potential military superpower, with significant regional defense and rising global power projection capabilities.
