KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted another spell of rainfall in Karachi and Hyderabad today, bringing much-needed relief to residents enduring persistent heat.
The monsoon showers — accompanied by strong winds and dust storms — are also expected in other regions of the country, increasing the risk of flooding in seasonal nullahs, the PMD warned.
Karachi experienced its first major monsoon downpour overnight, with thunder and lightning lighting up the skies. While the weather turned relatively pleasant, the city struggled with post-rain challenges. Rainwater remains stagnant in several areas, and approximately 350 electricity feeders tripped, causing widespread power outages across the metropolis.
In Hyderabad, the heavy rainfall led to a tragedy when the roof of a madrassa collapsed, resulting in the death of two children and injuring 14 others.
In response, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab visited several parts of the city, including Defence, Clifton, South District, Governor House, Sindh Assembly, and the Supreme Court building. During his inspection, the municipal commissioner briefed him on the city’s drainage operations. The mayor directed all municipal services departments to remain on high alert, cancelling staff leaves until further notice.
According to the PMD, a westerly weather system has moved over the western regions of the country. Under its influence, most parts of Sindh — including Karachi and Hyderabad — are likely to experience thunderstorms, gusty winds, and rain from today through June 29.
Residents are advised to exercise caution and stay updated through official weather bulletins.
