Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, has advised tennis star Novak Djokovic to communicate directly with the public following a controversy at the Australian Open 2025. The incident arose after Djokovic declined a post-match interview with Channel 9, the tournament’s official broadcaster, citing disrespectful behavior from the media.
Musk shared Djokovic’s post on X (formerly Twitter), remarking:
“It’s way better just to talk to the public directly than go through the negativity filter of legacy media.”
Incident During Fourth-Round Match
Djokovic secured a straight-sets victory over Jiri Lehecka with scores of 6-3, 6-4, and 7-6. However, the match at the Rod Laver Arena was marred by disturbances from the crowd, leading Djokovic to reject a customary courtside interview with former champion Jim Courier. The decision surprised spectators and commentators alike.
Djokovic’s Response
The Serbian athlete later addressed his decision through a press conference and a video message on X. He cited offensive remarks made by Tony Jones of Channel 9, who allegedly mocked Serbian fans and described Djokovic as “overrated” while jokingly calling for him to be removed from the tournament. Djokovic noted that neither Jones nor the broadcaster had issued an apology, influencing his choice to skip the interview.
The controversy has sparked a broader discussion about media behavior and athletes’ interactions with traditional broadcasters.
