Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) President, Nawaz Sharif, has expressed optimism about the country’s future, stating that Pakistan is on the verge of achieving economic prosperity. The three-time former Prime Minister made these remarks during an event held at Park Lane hotel, attended by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and hosted by PMLN’s new UK President, Ahsan Dar.
Condemnation of Attack on Khawaja Asif
Nawaz and Maryam condemned the knife threat made against Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on the London Underground. Asif, who was present at the event, confirmed the incident and said that the matter is being reported to the police. Nawaz slammed the individuals responsible, accusing them of being “trained and groomed” to harass political figures.
Nawaz Reflects on Political Setbacks
Addressing the PMLN workers’ convention, Nawaz Sharif recalled his disqualification and removal from party leadership, attributing it to personal vendettas by certain individuals. He criticized retired judges involved in the Panama case, holding them responsible for hindering Pakistan’s progress. “Pakistan could have become the Asian Tiger today if it wasn’t for their selfish motives,” Nawaz remarked, blaming the judicial decisions for damaging the nation’s economic potential.
Praise for Shehbaz Sharif’s Government
Nawaz Sharif lauded Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s efforts, highlighting his dedication to steering the country towards stability. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the government but expressed confidence in its ability to bring prosperity, noting recent positive trends in the stock market and growing investor interest in Pakistan.
Maryam Nawaz Denies Health Rumors
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz addressed speculation about her health, confirming she does not have throat cancer as reported by some media outlets. She revealed she had been undergoing treatment for a parathyroid condition in Geneva but assured supporters of her recovery, stating she would return to Pakistan shortly.
Clashes Between PTI and PMLN Supporters
The event saw tensions flare outside the venue, as supporters of PTI and PMLN clashed near the Avenfield flats. The scuffle, lasting about 20 minutes, was eventually brought under control by police intervention.
Khawaja Asif, reflecting on the incident and the broader political climate, accused PTI of radicalizing its overseas followers, leading them to aggressive behavior against political opponents.
Repeated Incidents of Harassment in London
This attack on Khawaja Asif is the latest in a series of harassment incidents involving Pakistani political figures in London. Last month, former Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa’s vehicle was attacked by PTI supporters. Similarly, Judge Humayun Dilawar and PMLN leaders Marriyum Aurangzeb and Hina Pervaiz Butt were also harassed during their visits to the UK, highlighting escalating political tensions among the Pakistani diaspora.
In his concluding remarks, Nawaz Sharif called for unity and resilience among PMLN supporters, asserting that the party remains committed to serving the nation despite ongoing challenges.
