Algerian Olympic gold medalist Imane Khelif is taking legal action against media outlets following reports of alleged leaks of her medical records, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Wednesday. Recent French media claims suggested that Khelif, 25, has XY chromosomes, sparking heated public debate and comments from notable figures, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and author JK Rowling.
The gender controversy surrounding Khelif intensified after her swift 46-second victory over Angela Carini at the Paris Olympics, a match in which Carini withdrew due to a severe injury. The IOC confirmed Khelif’s legal steps against those commenting on her situation and mentioned that she is preparing additional lawsuits in response to recent media reports. They expressed sadness over the “abuse” Khelif has faced.
A celebrated figure in Algeria, Khelif also filed a complaint in France regarding online harassment. Having previously competed in the women’s category at the Tokyo Olympics and various IBA tournaments, Khelif has received the support of the IOC, which refrained from further comments due to ongoing legal proceedings.
