CHANGSHA: Pakistan and China signed three important Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in Changsha, Hunan province, in the presence of Asif Ali Zardari, aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation in water management, agricultural technology and the tea sector.
The agreements mark a significant step forward in strengthening economic and technical collaboration between the two countries, particularly under expanding frameworks of development and investment partnerships.
The MoU on seawater desalination was signed by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and Yuhui, Chairman of Luxian Environmental Technology Group. Another agreement focusing on agricultural technology cooperation was signed between Sharjeel Inam Memon and Chen Zhishen, Chairman of Longpin High-Tech Information Company. A third MoU related to the tea sector was signed by Senator Saleem Mandviwala on behalf of Pakistan, while Zhou Chongwang and Hao Jiaolong represented the Chinese companies.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the agreements would serve as key milestones in the development of multiple sectors in Pakistan. He noted that these MoUs would open new avenues for investment, facilitate the provision of essential services, promote the adoption of modern technologies and strengthen industrial cooperation between the two countries.
Highlighting the importance of desalination projects, he said that for a megacity like Karachi, addressing water scarcity is critical. “With the help of modern technology, seawater can be converted into usable water, which will significantly contribute to resolving Karachi’s long-standing water crisis,” he stated.
He further emphasized that the Sindh government is actively pursuing long-term solutions to urban challenges, and collaboration with leading international companies forms a key part of this strategy. The desalination initiative, he said, is expected to improve urban infrastructure, enhance public services and create employment and investment opportunities.
On agricultural cooperation, Sharjeel Inam Memon termed the partnership with Chinese companies as highly encouraging for Sindh’s economy. He noted that Sindh, being an agriculturally rich province, stands to benefit greatly from modern farming techniques, improved seed varieties, smart agriculture systems and advanced research. “This collaboration will help increase per-acre yield, strengthen farmers’ capacity and boost agricultural exports,” he added.
He also pointed out that China’s progress in agricultural research and innovation offers valuable lessons for Pakistan, and such partnerships will contribute to modernizing the agriculture sector and strengthening the national economy.
Regarding the tea sector, he said that the agreement would further deepen trade relations between Pakistan and China while promoting investment and people-to-people connectivity, alongside expanding opportunities in the tea industry.
The signing ceremony was also attended by Qasim Naveed Qamar, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister of Sindh on Investment and Public-Private Partnership Projects, Chief Secretary Sindh Ali Hassan Brohi and Pakistan’s Ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi.
