Pakistan Reacts: PM Shehbaz and PTI’s Zulfi Bukhari Extend Congratulations

Donald Trump has made a remarkable return to the White House, securing a second non-consecutive term as the 47th President of the United States after a polarizing and fiercely competitive election against Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump, despite facing numerous controversies, criminal convictions, and even surviving an assassination attempt, succeeded in swaying key swing states and gathering a strong mandate, securing 277 electoral votes to Harris’s 224. This victory also marks a shift in control of the Senate to the Republicans, giving Trump crucial legislative support to push his agenda forward.

Trump’s return to power has stirred reactions globally. In Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed hope for enhanced Pakistan-US relations, congratulating Trump on his “historic victory.” Zulfi Bukhari, an adviser to PTI leader Imran Khan, announced plans to engage with Trump’s team in Washington, intending to discuss issues related to human rights and the rule of law in Pakistan. Bukhari also highlighted a personal connection with Trump’s family, which he hopes to leverage to advocate for Imran Khan’s case.

On the political front, the PTI, under Imran Khan, celebrated Trump’s victory as a hopeful sign of potential improvements in Pakistan-US relations, given the past friendly interactions between Trump and Khan. However, key figures in the Pakistani government, including Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, downplayed expectations of foreign intervention on Khan’s behalf.

Trump’s victory speech emphasized his goals for a secure border, economic stability, and reducing the national debt, vowing to make America safe and prosperous. His campaign was marked by bold promises, including “fixing the country,” tax cuts, and restoring the military, while controversial stances on climate policies and immigration stirred intense debate domestically and internationally.

In her concession, Vice President Harris called for unity and pledged to support a peaceful transfer of power. The Trump administration’s focus now lies on addressing pressing issues at home, with the world watching how his policies might influence global dynamics.
