Pakistan’s Internet Speed Set to Improve with New Undersea Cable

KARACHI: A state-of-the-art undersea internet cable is being installed to enhance internet speed and reliability in Pakistan, offering up to 24 terabytes of bandwidth, according to Geo News.

Details of the New Cable

  • The cable, spanning over 45,000 kilometers, is being laid by a French firm.
  • Currently, Pakistan relies on approximately 8 terabytes of bandwidth from seven existing undersea cables.
  • The new system will connect the African region to Pakistan, addressing issues of slow internet speeds and improving connectivity.
  • Platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram are expected to benefit significantly from the enhanced bandwidth.

Expected Impact

  • The cable is projected to become operational next year.
  • In addition to this cable, four more major internet lines are in development, including infrastructure for 5G connectivity.
  • These developments aim to resolve bandwidth congestion and provide fiber connectivity to mobile towers, improving overall internet infrastructure in Pakistan.

Sajjad Mustafa Syed, Chairman of the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA), stated:

“With these advancements, our internet capacity will nearly double, ensuring stable connectivity and infrastructure for the next two to five years.”

Call for Robust Legislation

Speaking at a convocation in Jamshoro, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari emphasized the need for equitable and uninterrupted internet access.

  • He highlighted fiber-optic cables and robust internet infrastructure as the future of Pakistan’s digital landscape.
  • Criticizing internet censorship, he pointed out the adverse effects of uninformed decisions in Islamabad that disrupt youth access to the internet.

Bilawal pledged to introduce a Digital Rights Bill in Parliament, ensuring affordable and unrestricted internet access.

“Affordable internet is a fundamental right in today’s world. I will present a Digital Bill written by us, for us, in the National Assembly. Share your suggestions with me on Instagram, Facebook, and X,” he urged.

Conclusion

The new undersea cable, along with other planned initiatives, is set to transform Pakistan’s internet infrastructure. These measures, coupled with legislative support, aim to position the country for a digitally connected future while addressing long-standing challenges in connectivity and digital rights.
