Pakistan’s Nuclear Power Capacity Reaches 3,530MW Across Two Sites

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s nuclear energy sector now boasts an installed capacity of 3,530 megawatts (MW) from six operational nuclear power plants located at two separate sites, according to the Economic Survey 2024-25.

The Chashma Nuclear Power Generating Station (CNPGS), situated near Mianwali, consists of four operational units — C-1, C-2, C-3, and C-4 — collectively producing 1,330 MW of electricity.

Meanwhile, the Karachi Nuclear Power Generating Station (KNPGS), located along the Karachi coastline, contributes 2,200 MW to the national grid through its two advanced reactors, K-2 and K-3. These units are based on generation-III nuclear technology, known for improved safety and efficiency features.

Pakistan’s first nuclear power plant, KANUPP, which had a capacity of 137 MW, was permanently shut down in August 2021 after five decades of service. It is now undergoing the decommissioning process.

The average tariff of electricity generated from these nuclear plants reflects a significant portion attributed to debt servicing, especially for the newer units. However, this repayment period accounts for only 12 years, or roughly 20% of the plants’ full economic lifespan, implying future reductions in generation costs over time.
