KARACHI: The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (Workers) has strongly condemned the killing of a Lebanese woman journalist in an Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon, urging the international community to ensure the safety and protection of journalists worldwide.
In a joint statement, PFUJ (Workers) President Dr. Saadia Kamal, Secretary General Anees Haider, Senior Vice President Nasir Sheikh, Vice President Nayer Sarhadi, Additional Secretary General Umar Farooq Gondal, Finance Secretary Javed Malik, Joint Secretary Ayub Burmi, and Islamabad and Rawalpindi Union of Journalists (Workers) representative Hameedullah Abid expressed deep grief over the martyrdom of journalist Amal Khalili.
They stated that the killing of the journalist in the drone attack raises serious questions over the role of international organizations, including the United Nations, in ensuring the safety of media professionals.
The PFUJ leaders emphasized that journalists across the world, particularly in conflict zones, have become increasingly vulnerable while performing their professional duties. They pointed out that incidents of targeted killings of journalists have been reported from Palestine, Iran, Lebanon, and other conflict-hit regions, including Indian-administered Kashmir.
They lamented that despite repeated incidents, there appears to be a lack of serious efforts at the global level to ensure the protection of journalists. The union called upon international bodies and human rights organizations to take immediate and effective measures to safeguard journalists, especially those working in war-affected areas.
The PFUJ (Workers) reiterated its demand for accountability and stressed that the safety of journalists must be treated as a global priority.
