PIA Bidding Set for October 1 Amid Final Preparations

The government of Pakistan has shared final bid documents for the privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) with six pre-qualified bidders, signaling the next phase in the sale of a 60% stake in the national carrier. These documents will be signed today, September 27, with earnest money deposited shortly after.

The financial bidding is scheduled for October 1, with the process being live-streamed to ensure transparency. This step follows months of site visits, meetings, and feedback sessions. The bidders are expected to increase the airline’s fleet from 20 to 40-45 aircraft within the next three to five years, with a focus on modernizing the fleet and retaining employee perks for several years.

Concerns over PIA’s most profitable routes, including the ongoing ban on European flights, are being addressed, with optimism that the ban may be lifted soon. Additionally, the Privatisation Commission has incorporated employee retention and pension guarantees into the privatisation agreement.

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Privatisation, chaired by MNA Farooq Sattar, has requested to review the final agreement, emphasizing the need to safeguard domestic routes and employee benefits.

The privatisation process is part of broader reforms aimed at addressing financial challenges and modernizing Pakistan’s aviation sector.
