ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for expedited completion of low-cost housing projects under the federal government while encouraging public-private partnerships to enhance investment in housing. Chairing a review meeting on ongoing projects by the Ministry of Housing, the prime minister emphasized transparency, quality construction, and reforms to modernize housing allocations.
Housing Sector Reforms
The Ministry of Housing provided updates on policy reforms, including amendments to the National Housing Policy 2001, set for final approval by March 2025. The digitization of housing allocation systems for government employees and a new online rent payment system were highlighted as steps to reduce corruption and improve transparency.
Key low-cost housing initiatives include:
- 630 residential units in Kuchlak, Quetta
- 4,112 units in Islamabad
- Upcoming projects in Peshawar, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad
The prime minister directed third-party validation of all construction projects and emphasized using renowned international construction companies to ensure quality.
Major Construction and Public Amenities
The meeting discussed new projects by the Federal Government Employees Housing Authority (FGEHA), including a five-star hotel, a hospital, an IT park, and schools in Islamabad. PM Shehbaz directed submission of detailed plans for these projects, including cost estimates and timelines. He also ordered the dissolution of non-functional organizations and continued reforms to enhance ministry efficiency.
FBR Modernization
In a separate meeting on the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), the prime minister reviewed progress on the faceless customs assessment system, currently operational in Karachi, and urged its expansion nationwide by February 2025. He called for collaboration with the Ministry of IT to integrate artificial intelligence into customs operations, minimizing human involvement.
Further steps include:
- A track and trace system boosting revenue in tobacco, sugar, fertilizer, and cement industries
- Body cameras and tablets for inspection transparency
- Mobile jammers and CCTV systems at customs terminals
The upgradation of the web-based One Customs system is underway, with a design completion target by March 2025.
Commendation of Security Forces
The prime minister praised the security forces for eliminating 27 terrorists in Balochistan’s Kacchi district, reaffirming the nation’s resolve to defeat terrorism. He acknowledged the sacrifices of armed forces personnel, pledging continued national support in the fight against terrorism.
