PM Shehbaz Sharif Congratulates Yunus on His Appointment as Bangladesh’s Interim Chief Advisor

On Friday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended his heartfelt congratulations to Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus following his appointment as the Chief Advisor to Bangladesh’s interim government.

In a message posted on X, Sharif, 72, expressed his eagerness to enhance collaboration between Pakistan and Bangladesh under Yunus’s leadership. Yunus, 84, was selected to lead the interim government by a student-led movement that played a significant role in the recent political upheaval in Bangladesh, leading to the resignation and departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The protests, which were driven by demands for political change, unfortunately resulted in the loss of over 400 lives, predominantly among young students.

In his X post, Sharif wrote: “Heartiest congratulations to Professor Muhammad Yunus on his swearing-in as Chief Advisor of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. I wish him great success in steering Bangladesh towards a peaceful and prosperous future. I look forward to working with him to strengthen cooperation between Pakistan and Bangladesh.”

Yunus, who had been in Paris for medical treatment, returned to Bangladesh on Thursday. His appointment followed significant backing from student protesters who supported his role in leading the interim government and overseeing the upcoming elections.

Known as the “banker to the poor” for his pioneering work in microfinance, Yunus won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his efforts to alleviate poverty through small loans.

Pakistan and Bangladesh have maintained diplomatic relations since December 1975, and Bangladesh remains Pakistan’s largest trading partner in South Asia, with bilateral trade ranging between $800 to $900 million annually. The countries also engage through various institutional mechanisms such as Bilateral Political Consultations and the Joint Economic Commission, and they collaborate on multiple international platforms including the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
