Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, calling on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to impose sanctions, including arms and trade embargoes, on Tel Aviv for what he termed genocidal acts against Palestinians. Speaking during the high-level open debate at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, the prime minister demanded immediate action to halt Israel’s brutalities.
Sharif emphasized the need for the international community to pressure Israel to cease its attacks in Gaza and prevent further escalation in the Middle East. He also denounced Israel’s military actions in Lebanon, insisting that Israeli leaders be held accountable for their crimes against both Palestinians and Lebanese civilians.
In his address, the prime minister urged the UNSC to create a fair plan for a ceasefire and peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, while highlighting how ongoing wars in the Middle East and Europe, along with rising global poverty and tensions among major powers, are threatening global stability.
Calls for Action on Kashmir and Terrorism
Shehbaz Sharif also raised the Kashmir issue, urging the UNSC to address the ongoing human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir. He argued that the unresolved dispute poses a significant threat to international peace and security and urged the council to enforce its resolutions on a plebiscite for Kashmiri self-determination.
The premier further called on the UNSC to take action against the resurgence of terrorism, particularly from Afghanistan, including threats from groups like Daesh and “Fitna al-Khawarij.” He also highlighted the need for the council to support African nations in combating terrorism and external interventions, pushing for stronger, more effective UN peacekeeping operations.
Global Arms Control and Peacebuilding
Prime Minister Sharif stressed the importance of preventing conflict among major powers, especially in Asia, and addressing the rising global arms race in both nuclear and conventional weapons. He also called for the UNSC to regulate emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence, which he said are increasing the likelihood of war.
In conclusion, the prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to pursuing these goals when it assumes its seat in the UNSC next year, pledging to work alongside other member states to ensure peace and security globally.
