Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled the country amidst escalating protests. The capital city of Dhaka witnessed thousands of protestors celebrating in the streets following weeks of deadly demonstrations against the government.

In a national address, army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced the establishment of an interim government after discussions with various political parties. The announcement came shortly after local media broadcast images of protestors storming the prime minister’s official residence in Dhaka. The scenes showed crowds overturning furniture, smashing glass door panels, and taking away books and other items from the residence.
