Police Refute Akhtar Mengal’s Claim of Raid at Islamabad Lodges

Sardar Akhtar Mengal, leader of the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M), claimed that Islamabad Police raided his lodges and mistreated some of his party members, sparking controversy. Mengal alleged that police entered the lodges where his party senator, Naseema Ehsan, was staying, confining her to her apartment and kidnapping her son.

However, Islamabad Police swiftly denied these allegations. According to a police spokesperson, they did not conduct a raid at Mengal’s lodges but were responding to a complaint by BNP-M Acting President Sajid Tareen, who had reported that someone was following him. The police said they were merely there to gather further information, not to carry out a raid.

Tareen, who was present at Mengal’s apartment, confirmed that the police visited after receiving intelligence reports against the residents. He viewed the police visit as an act of harassment, noting that he had urged officers to have those behind the intelligence tip speak to him directly. Tareen emphasized his commitment to ensuring that BNP-M senators vote in line with party positions, especially concerning the constitutional court package, despite any external pressure.

Mengal, known for his critical stance on how Balochistan is treated, expressed his frustration with the situation, reiterating that he had resigned from the National Assembly in September over what he described as the “worsening situation” in Balochistan. Mengal lamented the continuous harassment of his party senators and their families, warning that his only remaining option might be to ask his senators to step down if the pressure persists.

While the police denied any wrongdoing, Mengal’s claims highlight the ongoing tensions and political unrest faced by the BNP-M.
