Premium Number Plates Auction in Karachi Raises Rs675.4 Million for Noble Cause

KARACHI: The Sindh Excise Department held its first auction of premium number plates on Saturday night, drawing some of the wealthiest car enthusiasts in the country to a grand event in a hotel’s spacious hall. The auction, featuring 40 exclusive number plates, generated a total of Rs675.4 million for the provincial government, earmarked for a significant cause.

Auction Highlights:

The auction was divided into three categories:

Platinum Category: Bidding started at Rs2 million.
Gold Category: Bidding started at Rs10 million.
Silver Category: Bidding started at Rs500,000.
Participants were required to pay a non-refundable registration fee of Rs10,000 to enter the bidding.

Top Earners:

Number ‘1’ Plate: Sold for Rs100 million.
Number ‘5’ Plate: Sold for Rs53 million.
Number ‘7’ Plate: Sold for Rs46 million.
Number ‘8’ Plate: Sold for Rs41 million.
Number ‘9’ Plate: Sold for Rs40 million.
Number ‘786’ Plate: Sold for Rs26.5 million.
Significance of Numbers:

The numbers ‘1’, ‘786’, and ‘7’ attracted high bids due to their spiritual significance. Bidders associated the number ‘1’ with the belief in the oneness of God, ‘786’ with the Islamic invocation “Bismillah,” and ‘7’ with various culturally and spiritually significant elements.

Purpose of Funds:

The funds raised from the auction will be utilized by the Sindh government to construct new homes for families displaced by the 2022 floods. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, the mastermind behind the auction, emphasized the noble intent behind the initiative. He stated, “The proceeds collected through this auction will be used for a very good and noble cause of building housing for the poor people displaced by the 2022 floods in Sindh.”

Future Plans:

Minister Memon also announced that the second phase of the premium number plates auction would be launched soon, expected to generate additional resources to further support the ongoing reconstruction efforts. The funds will be used to build a total of 2,251 houses for flood victims, as well as maintain necessary infrastructure, provide medical assistance, and support economic recovery efforts.

Support from Officials:

Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah and former Minister for Excise and Taxation Mukesh Chawla were present at the event, showing their support for the initiative. The Sindh government’s comprehensive approach aims to help flood-affected individuals rebuild their lives and ensure long-term recovery and development.

This auction not only highlighted the enthusiasm of car aficionados but also underscored a significant social commitment, leveraging luxury and wealth for the greater good of society.
