Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) Faceless Customs Assessment System during his visit to Karachi.
The Prime Minister reviewed the customs assessment operations on this occasion, highlighting the importance of efficiency and transparency in customs clearance procedures.
This new system, established at Karachi Port under the direct instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has significantly reduced customs clearance times. The minimum processing duration now ranges from 15 to 20 minutes, with a maximum time of up to 19 hours.
The faceless assessment system is a cornerstone of FBR’s reform agenda. Under this system, direct contact between importers and assessment officers is eliminated, ensuring anonymity and reducing the potential for corruption. Importers will no longer know which officer is assessing their goods, and assessment officers will remain unaware of whose goods they are processing.
This system has also enhanced operational speed, contributing to more efficient customs processes. Moreover, all computers used in this system are restricted from accessing social media applications, reinforcing a focused and secure working environment.
The faceless customs system has already eased the clearance process for importers, fostering greater simplicity, ease, and transparency. Honest and qualified customs officers have been appointed to manage this innovative digital platform.
To maintain efficiency and focus, facilities for meals, prayer, and washrooms have been provided on-site, where mobile phone usage is prohibited for staff.
Since its implementation, the new customs clearance system has reduced processing complaints by 80%. The initiative marks a significant milestone in combating corruption and enhancing service delivery in customs operations across the country.
