The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has issued show-cause notices to four of its lawmakers — Zain Qureshi, Riyaz Fatyana, Aslam Ghuman, and Miqdad Ali Khan — for defying party instructions during the passage of the controversial 26th Constitutional Amendment. The notices were issued by PTI’s central secretariat on Tuesday, accusing the lawmakers of failing to adhere to directives aimed at safeguarding the party’s stance.
The PTI had instructed all its members in the National Assembly and Senate to remain at a designated location to avoid any pressure or coercion and to refrain from engaging with government officials concerning the constitutional amendment. The law, which passed with a slim majority, has been strongly opposed by PTI due to its implications for the country’s judicial system.
The government managed to pass the controversial legislation, securing 225 votes, just surpassing the required 224. Notably, the votes of some PTI-backed independent MNAs, such as Zahoor Qureshi, Aurangzeb Khichi, Usman Ali, and Mubarak Zeb, contributed to the passage of the bill. PTI maintains that the involvement of these MNAs violated party orders.
Zain Qureshi had been unreachable since October 16, with a video surfacing on October 21 about his status, coinciding with the passage of the amendment. Opposition leader Omar Ayub raised concerns about Miqdad Ali and others facing alleged harassment or disappearance in the lead-up to the vote, further complicating matters.
The show-cause notices emphasized that these lawmakers left the designated location and did not remain in contact with the party, disregarding clear instructions. PTI claims to have credible evidence that the lawmakers intended to defect if needed, accusing them of disloyalty.
The lawmakers have been given seven days to respond to the notices and explain why they should not be expelled from the party for violating instructions. Failure to respond will lead to further disciplinary action, including expulsion from PTI.
