Rachael Lillis, Voice of Misty in Pokémon, Passes Away at 46

Rachael Lillis, the talented voice actor known for bringing to life iconic characters in the Pokémon series, including Misty, Jessie, and Jigglypuff, has passed away at the age of 46. Lillis was diagnosed with breast cancer in May and sadly died on Saturday.

Veronica Taylor, Lillis’ co-star who voiced Ash Ketchum in the English dub of Pokémon, shared the heartbreaking news on social media, expressing her sorrow: “Rachael was an extraordinary talent, a bright light that shone through her voice whether speaking or singing. Her performances as Pokémon’s Misty and Jessie were particularly beloved and will be forever remembered.”

Taylor continued, “Rachael was incredibly grateful for the outpouring of love and support she received during her battle with cancer. It truly made a positive difference in her life.”

Taylor also reflected on their personal friendship, describing Lillis as someone with “unlimited kindness and compassion,” a sharp sense of humor, and a deep commitment to her work. “I’m not sure how this very dark void will be filled now that her light no longer shines in it,” she added.

Lillis’ sister, Laurie Orr, also shared the sad news on a GoFundMe page that had been set up to help cover Lillis’ medical expenses, which raised $98,000. Orr wrote, “She passed peacefully Saturday night, without pain, and for that, we are grateful.” The remaining funds will be used to cover medical bills, a memorial service, and contributions to cancer research.

Born in New York in 1978, Lillis initially trained in opera before transitioning to voice acting in the 1990s. She became a beloved figure in the Pokémon franchise, voicing Misty, a water-type gym leader, and other key characters. She appeared in 423 episodes of the Pokémon anime, one of the most popular franchises of the 90s.

In addition to her work on Pokémon, Lillis lent her voice to characters in shows like Hunter x Hunter, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Winx Club, and the Super Smash Bros game series.

A spokesperson for Pokémon Company International expressed their condolences, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Rachael Lillis. Her performances in the Pokémon animated series will be cherished by the many fans who grew up with the characters she brought to life with her special talent. She will be remembered for generations to come, and we will always keep her close in our hearts.”
