Greater safety and restricted access for upcoming National Assembly session

According to the Assembly’s spokesman, rigorous security plans have been set for today’s National Assembly session in Pakistan; guest admission is absolutely forbidden.

According to The Financial Daily News, only media professionals with full-session press gallery badges issued by the National Assembly Secretariat’s Directorate General of Media would be permitted entry to Parliament House.

One-day press gallery card issuing has been suspended in an effort to strengthen restrictions.

Only cameramen on pre-approved lists will be allowed admission to Parliament’s Gate 1 for those covering the session. For security reasons, it is recommended that journalists bring their press gallery cards.

The National Assembly’s nine-point agenda for today’s meeting has been made public. Notably, there is no 26th Amendment to the Constitution. The 2024 Legal Aid and Justice Authority Amendment Bill is on the agenda and will be put up for approval.

The meeting will also cover a call attention notice that members of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) submitted, which addresses chronic theft and fraud in general sales tax collection.

The Senate session is set to start at 3 pm today, and the National Assembly session will start at 6 pm.

Assembly Devenses Political Chaos Over Divisive Constitutional Amendments

Following a series of high-level discussions at the Islamabad home of Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), the constitutional modifications were anticipated to be introduced in parliament.

Key political figures, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, the Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and Akhtar Mengal of the Balochistan National Party (Mengal), visited Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s home on Saturday for talks.

Fazlur Rehman had said that PTI had asked for more time to decide on its position over the constitutional amendment. He went on to say that the bill will be brought before parliament for unanimous approval following their answer.

However, PTI made the decision earlier today to abstain from the Senate and National Assembly voting on the 26th Constitutional Amendments.

After the party’s political committee met, a statement was released announcing the decision.

The PTI statement made it clear that the party will not participate in what it described as a “controversial” and “non-transparent” constitutional amendment process. It announced a total boycott of the Parliamentary voting process in both houses.

However, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari warned the opposition yesterday that he would pursue the option of modifying the Constitution with a two-thirds majority if his final attempt to convince them to support the much-discussed 26th constitutional amendment failed.

The leader of the PPP respectfully asked the JUI-F to send its lawmakers to vote in favor of the amendment and to attempt to get PTI MNAs to join them in the National Assembly. “But if my last attempt fails, we should pray for democracy, for the federation, for political stability and for the integrity of Pakistan.
