Security concerns will dominate discussions at the upcoming cricket boards’ chiefs’ meeting in Sri Lanka on Monday. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has arrived in Colombo to address any queries from participating members regarding the Champions Trophy, scheduled to begin in February 2025 across three Pakistani cities.
A substantial portion of the event’s budget has been allocated to ensure the safety of visiting teams and officials. An official emphasized, “Security has always been a top priority. We have successfully hosted top teams like Australia and England recently.”
The PCB has consistently provided robust security for teams visiting Pakistan. Over the past three to four years, numerous teams, except India, have played series in Pakistan, with all expressing high satisfaction with the security arrangements.
The upcoming season, featuring Test and triangular series involving Bangladesh, England, New Zealand, and South Africa, will follow the same stringent security protocols. These measures will extend into the Champions Trophy.
Beyond security, other significant expenditures include board and lodging, and inter-city travel via chartered flights. “Traveling from one city to another through chartered flights and board and lodging of teams and officials are the major expenditures,” an official stated. These details were initially presented at the Chief Executive Officers’ meeting and will be further elaborated by the PCB Chairman.
The PCB is also investing heavily in renovating stadiums for the Champions Trophy. Detailed plans for these upgrades will be shared with the board heads.
This marks Pakistan’s first time hosting a major international cricket event in 28 years. “We know that the Champions Trophy is very important from Pakistan’s perspective. Every effort will be made to host it in a befitting manner,” an official said.
The ICC’s Financial and Commercial Committee meeting on Sunday addressed security, teams, players’ prize money, and other expenditures. The ICC conference, themed “Capitalising on the Olympic Opportunity,” will cover topics such as “Diversity and Inclusion,” “environmental sustainability and the sport,” and “Cricket’s triumphant return at LA28.”
