Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan has declared the September 21 public rally in Lahore as a “do or die” event for the party, urging the nation to come out in full force. Speaking to reporters at Adiala Jail, where he has been imprisoned for 15 months, Khan emphasized that the rally was crucial for both the party and the country, regardless of the circumstances.
Khan encouraged his supporters not to fear imprisonment, reiterating his long-standing commitment to upholding the Constitution. He stressed that the Constitution guarantees the right to assemble and called on the people to stand up for their future. He also expressed concerns about the Supreme Court, saying it is the last institution from which people expect justice, and warned that if it is undermined, Pakistan could turn into a “banana republic.”
He criticized the recent constitutional amendments, arguing that they were intended to weaken the Supreme Court and democracy itself. Khan warned that without democracy and freedom, the country would fall into subjugation. He also pointed out that many people have been jailed for extended periods without trial, while others in power were being granted constitutional extensions.
The former prime minister also claimed that Asif Ali Zardari and Nawaz Sharif have historically fled the country and may do so again, highlighting the mismanagement of funds during his tenure. He mentioned that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had collected significant sums of money during his government, but much of it was lost due to political deals like NRO-2.
Meanwhile, the Special Accountability Court in Islamabad has adjourned the hearing of the Al-Qadir Trust reference against Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi. Imran’s lawyer completed the cross-examination of the NAB witness, with Bushra Bibi’s lawyer set to continue today.
