Shaheen Afridi Faces Potential Disciplinary Action

Shaheen Shah Afridi, the Pakistani fast bowler, may face disciplinary action following reports of his non-cooperative and rude behavior during the T20 World Cup. This controversy could lead to his exclusion from the upcoming two-match series against Bangladesh.

Allegations of Misconduct

The national selection committee, including team coaches Mohammad Yousaf, Asad Shafiq, and several support staff members, is awaiting final approval on whether Shaheen will be included in the series. This follows reports of his alleged uncooperative attitude and a verbal altercation with coach Mohammad Yousaf during a net session. Despite Shaheen’s apology to Yousaf, the incident was documented in reports submitted to PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

Team officials have pointed out Shaheen’s failure to participate in group discussions before crucial World Cup matches, further adding to the case against him. One coaching staff member, speaking to ‘The News,’ downplayed the incident, calling it a routine matter, but confirmed it was included in the World Cup campaign reports.

Potential Consequences

While some officials believe dropping Shaheen from the series is necessary for accountability, others suggest alternative actions such as revoking his NOC for foreign leagues or demoting him from his A category contract. Ultimately, the PCB chairman holds the final authority to decide on the matter and has the power to pardon the fast bowler.

Upcoming National Cricket Camp

The national cricket camp for the short two-match series against Bangladesh will commence in Islamabad on August 6, with Red-Ball Coach Jason Gillespie overseeing the training. Gillespie, who recently worked with the Shaheens during their Australian tour, confirmed in a media talk in Karachi that several promising players are close to breaking into the Test cricket scene.

“I hope that there are a few who could be seen playing for Pakistan in the near future. They are so talented and eager to play at the highest level,” Gillespie stated.

As the situation develops, the PCB’s decision on Shaheen Afridi’s disciplinary action will be closely watched by cricket fans and analysts alike.
