Sharp Decline in Afghan Transit Trade Reflects Anti-Smuggling Measures

Measures directed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to curb smuggling under the guise of Afghan transit trade have started to yield results, with a significant drop in imports by Afghanistan.

Government figures reveal that Afghan imports have decreased by over $4.21 billion. During the fiscal year 2023-24, the trade volume was $2.88 billion, compared to $7.9 billion in 2022, marking a substantial reduction of 83% in the early months of the new fiscal year. In July 2024, the trade volume plummeted to $9.8 million from $58.3 million in July 2023.

This major decline in Afghan transit trade highlights the effectiveness of the measures implemented by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government in combating smuggling.
