KARACHI: The Sindh cabinet on Thursday approved an extension in the tenure of the judicial commission investigating the death of young entrepreneur Mir Raza Ali, allowing it until October 15 to complete its probe and finalise recommendations.
Raza, an IBA graduate and businessman, was found dead in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar area a day after he went missing on July 28.
The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, according to a spokesperson for the chief minister.
The cabinet was informed that the commission had already conducted extensive proceedings and recorded statements from dozens of witnesses. The additional time will allow it to complete the remaining investigation and prepare its recommendations.
The judicial commission, headed by Justice Omar Sial, had requested an extension after its previous tenure expired on September 27.
On September 28, Sindh Additional Home Secretary Javed Ahmed Abro informed the commission that a summary seeking an extension until October 15 had been forwarded to the provincial cabinet.
The commission is examining the circumstances surrounding Raza’s death and assessing whether the investigation into the case was conducted impartially and in accordance with the law.
Its mandate also includes determining whether any police, medico-legal or other officials were negligent, committed professional misconduct, suppressed or manipulated evidence, or were involved in any unlawful act or cover-up.
The commission will make recommendations regarding any further investigation, forensic examination, departmental proceedings or legal action considered necessary in the case.
