Sindh govt asked to provide reduction in electricity bills just as Punjab

The governor emphasized that Sindh should offer a relief of Rs14 per unit on electricity bills, similar to the subsidy announced by Punjab, warning that failure to do so could lead to public dissatisfaction in the province.

This call came after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif announced a two-month electricity subsidy for Punjab residents, applicable to those using up to 500 units in their August and September bills. The decision sparked criticism from other provinces, with Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) opposing what they saw as favoritism in electricity policy.

Governor Tessori urged CM Shah to follow Punjab’s example and allocate funds to provide relief for the people of Sindh. He also voiced concerns over the devastation caused by heavy rains in Sindh, which left many people homeless. He announced plans to send ration supplies to affected areas and visit the flood-hit regions personally.

Tessori clarified that no provincial funds were spent on events at the Governor’s House, including the cash prize awarded to gold medalist Arshad Nadeem. Additionally, he mentioned that the recent electricity tariff hike, which raised rates to Rs48.84 per unit, would not affect consumers using up to 200 units per month for the next three months, as per the federal government’s notification.
