In a tragic incident of street crime, a man named Faisal lost his life after being shot by robbers in Karachi’s Sarjani Sector 36. Faisal was targeted alongside his brother by two gunmen who attempted to steal their motorbike. Despite being injured after resisting the robbers, Faisal was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.
Faisal’s brother, who survived the ordeal, recounted how the two were returning home after receiving their salaries when the robbers confronted them. The criminals demanded Faisal’s motorbike, but he refused, prompting the gunmen to open fire before fleeing with Rs80,000 they had snatched from the brothers.
Faisal’s father, Shabbir, expressed his sorrow, lamenting the frequent occurrence of such robberies in the area. He emphasized that street crime had become a daily routine in their locality.
This latest incident highlights the rampant street crime problem in Karachi, where over 50,000 cases were reported to the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) between January and August 2024. On average, 208 incidents of street crime are recorded daily, involving the snatching of mobile phones, vehicles, and cash. Beyond the financial losses, these crimes have also claimed the lives of 100 people and left nearly 500 others injured.
Despite these staggering figures, many incidents remain unreported, underscoring the gravity of Karachi’s street crime crisis.
