Taiwan Says China’s Live Fire Drills Part of ‘Deterrence’ Strategy Amid Rising Tensions

Taiwan’s defense ministry has stated that recent live-fire drills conducted by China near the Taiwan Strait, while part of routine military exercises, may also be aimed at increasing China’s “deterrence effect” in the region. The drills, held near Niushan Island in Fujian province, took place on Tuesday and were closely monitored by Taiwan, according to a defense ministry statement.

Although the drills were characterized as part of China’s annual training, Taiwan’s defense ministry hinted that they could also be a strategic move tied to the evolving dynamics in the Taiwan Strait, without providing further details.

These exercises follow recent war games conducted by China near Taiwan, which Beijing justified as a warning against what it perceives as separatist activities. Taiwan’s Premier Cho Jung-tai criticized the frequency and proximity of these drills to Taiwan, arguing that they pose a threat to regional peace and stability, further escalating unnecessary tensions.

Over the past five years, Taiwan has reported an increase in Chinese military activity, including frequent warplane and warship missions near its airspace and waters. China remains hostile to Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing considers a separatist, and has rejected his calls for dialogue, insisting that Taiwan’s future must be decided solely by its people.
