HYDERABAD: The cycle of annual formal meetings limited to photo sessions in connection with the arrival of Muharram has become excessively prolonged. It appears that, as in previous years, these routine activities will merely fill files and then cities and towns will be abandoned, with authorities turning a deaf ear to genuine concerns. This time, even if only formally, some practical efforts should be made to resolve the problems faced by mourners. These views were expressed during an important meeting of the Azadari Coordination Committee Hyderabad, chaired by Muhammad Waris Abbasi, held in Qasimabad regarding the month of Muharram.
It was highlighted in the meeting that only four days remain before the start of Muharram, and the ritual of re-raising the sacred flags has already begun. However, in many parts of the city, including Qasimabad, Latifabad, and the rural taluka, the conditions of cleanliness, lighting, and roads remain severely deteriorated. These issues cannot be resolved through formal meetings alone, but only through real, on-ground actions. It is impossible to fix years of damaged infrastructure in just four days, so the administration must go beyond meetings and photo ops and take immediate, practical steps to improve lighting, sanitation, end nighttime load-shedding, repair the roads that have become ruins, and restore streetlights.
The meeting drew the attention of the Sindh government and all security agencies, stressing that the holy shrine of Masooma-e-Sindh in Agham Kot is currently one of the most important centers of mourning in Sindh. For more than two months during the mourning period, thousands of mourners and pilgrims from across the country gather there daily.
Known local miscreants, by repeatedly bringing in extremist groups from Hyderabad, Badin, and other cities, have been inciting hatred and desecrating sacred relics. This ongoing pattern raises serious concerns about potential untoward incidents. Therefore, during these two and a half months of mourning, not only must the best possible security arrangements be ensured in Agham Kot, but the authorities must also take immediate and strict action against known troublemakers under the law to maintain peace and order in the area.
