DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Three traffic police personnel were martyred while a traffic officer and two civilians sustained injuries after unidentified armed assailants opened fire on a traffic police mobile in the Wazirabad area of Tank district on Monday.
According to an initial police report, the attack occurred within the jurisdiction of City Police Station, Wazirabad. The martyred personnel were identified as Constables Gul Amin and Saleem Shah, and traffic police driver Fayyaz.
Traffic In-charge Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Asmatullah was injured in the firing. Two civilians, identified as Qaiser and Zafar Hussain, were also wounded and shifted to hospital for medical treatment.
Police said the assailants fled the scene after the attack, taking the traffic police vehicle with them.
Soon after the incident, a heavy contingent of police reached the area, cordoned off the site and launched a search operation to track down the attackers. An investigation has also been initiated to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi expressed deep grief over the martyrdom of the three traffic police personnel and sought a report from the relevant authorities.
The governor extended condolences to the families and colleagues of the martyred policemen. He also directed the authorities to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured and prayed for their early recovery.
The latest attack comes amid continuing security concerns in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in Tank and neighbouring Dera Ismail Khan districts.
Earlier, at least 11 people were reported martyred in a suicide attack at the Aman Mela anti-smuggling check post in the Darazinda area of Dera Ismail Khan. According to reports, an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into the check post on the DI Khan-Quetta Road, causing a powerful blast.
