At least 35 Pakistani pilgrims lost their lives, and 15 others were injured in a devastating bus accident in Yazd, Iran. The bus, which was carrying pilgrims from Larkana to participate in Arbaeen, overturned and caught fire near the Taftan-Dehshir checkpoint.
The accident occurred last night, with initial reports indicating that 30 passengers died on the spot, while five others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. The injured, many in critical condition, were rushed to local hospitals where emergency protocols were enacted.
Iranian traffic police have attributed the cause of the accident to a technical defect in the bus’s braking system. The bus was part of a convoy traveling from Larkana, with a total of 53 passengers on board, including 14 women. The group was split between two buses, with the second bus avoiding the accident due to a delay caused by documentation issues.
In response to the tragedy, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed their condolences and directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to assist with the repatriation of the bodies and care for the injured.
Iranian authorities have confirmed that 11 women and 17 men were among the deceased. The situation remains dire, with several of the injured in critical condition. The Pakistani consular services in Iran have been engaged to provide support and follow up on the accident.
