Manzar Naqvi

Our journey from Beijing to Shanghai was a highlight of the Pakistan Media Delegation’s visit to China, showcasing the marvels of China’s modern rail infrastructure. After a morning of shopping on Qianmen Street and enjoying a delicious lunch at a local Muslim restaurant, we made our way to the Beijing North Railway Station. This iconic railway station, with its modern amenities and efficient services, set the stage for an unforgettable high-speed journey across China.

Departure from Beijing North Railway Station
Located in Beijing’s Xicheng District, the Beijing North Railway Station serves as a major transportation hub, primarily catering to high-speed trains. It plays a significant role in connecting Beijing with the northern and northwestern regions of China. The station is a perfect blend of history and modernity, featuring sleek, contemporary architecture while retaining its significance as a historical transit point.

As we arrived at the station, we were impressed by its vast, well-organized layout. It was bustling with travelers, yet the efficiency of the operations ensured a smooth experience. We swiftly navigated through the security checks, collected our tickets, and made our way to the waiting area, which was equipped with comfortable seating and electronic displays showing train schedules.

The high-speed rail service in China has become a symbol of the country’s rapid technological advancement. Covering approximately 1,300 kilometers between Beijing and Shanghai, the journey that once took over 40 hours in the early 20th century now takes just about 4.5 hours. This remarkable improvement is a testament to China’s commitment to innovation and infrastructure development.

Boarding the High-Speed Train
We boarded the Fuxing high-speed train, one of the newest and most advanced models in China’s rail fleet. The word “Fuxing” means “Rejuvenation,” symbolizing the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and its dedication to progress. The sleek, silver exterior of the train, coupled with its aerodynamic design, was a sight to behold. Inside, the train was just as impressive, offering a spacious, well-lit cabin with plush, comfortable seats.

At 2:00 PM sharp, we settled into our seats, including our hosts, Katie, Wilson, and Wang Ki from CEN, who were here to facilitate this leg of our journey. Their hospitality and support were crucial in organizing our experience, adding a personal touch to the high-speed adventure ahead. Having accompanied us throughout all our visits in Beijing, they continued to be part of our delegation for the Shanghai visit, ensuring a seamless and memorable experience from start to finish.

Speed, Comfort, and Scenic Views
As the train departed Beijing North Railway Station, we could feel the acceleration almost immediately. Within minutes, the train had reached its cruising speed of 350 kilometers per hour, making it one of the fastest in the world. The ride was incredibly smooth, with barely any sensation of movement despite the immense speed.

Traveling at such high speeds, we were able to witness the changing landscapes of China through the large, panoramic windows. The view transitioned from the bustling urban sprawl of Beijing to the serene countryside, dotted with green fields, traditional villages, and the occasional industrial complex. The train route passes through key cities and provinces, providing a glimpse of China’s diverse geography and rapid urban development.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the journey was the silence and stability inside the cabin. Despite the high speed, the train was whisper-quiet, allowing us to have conversations without raising our voices. Many of us took the opportunity to relax, while others explored the amenities on board, including free Wi-Fi, charging ports, and a dining car offering snacks and beverages.

The efficiency of the high-speed rail system is a source of national pride in China, and it’s easy to see why. The train ran precisely on schedule, with real-time updates provided to passengers. The journey from Beijing to Shanghai, which would have once taken nearly two days, now felt like a short and pleasant ride, underscoring the power of modern transportation technology.

A Warm Welcome at Shanghai
In just about 4.5 hours, we arrived at the bustling Shanghai Railway Station, one of the city’s primary transit points. As we disembarked, we were greeted by Ms. Michelle Mu, a reporter from China Economic Net Shanghai, who would be our guide and host during our stay in the city. Her warm reception and friendly demeanor made us feel instantly welcome.
Shanghai, known as the “Pearl of the Orient,” is a vibrant metropolis that blends traditional Chinese culture with ultra-modern skyscrapers and cosmopolitan charm. As we made our way out of the station, the city’s towering skyline and bright lights were a stark contrast to the tranquil countryside we had seen during the train ride.

A Taste of Home in Shanghai
Our hosts wasted no time in giving us a taste of Shanghai’s culinary offerings. We were taken to Khan Baba, a popular Muslim restaurant in the city known for its authentic Pakistani cuisine. The restaurant was a delightful surprise, offering familiar dishes that made us feel at home. We indulged in a variety of traditional dishes, including biryani, seekh kebabs, and naan, all prepared with the rich, aromatic spices we love.

The meal was a wonderful opportunity to bond with our hosts and reflect on our journey. We shared stories about our experience on the high-speed train, marveling at the efficiency and comfort it offered. For many of us, it was our first time traveling on such a high-speed service, and it left a lasting impression.

A Symbol of Modern China
The high-speed train journey from Beijing to Shanghai was more than just a mode of transportation; it was an experience that encapsulated the spirit of modern China. It showcased the country’s commitment to innovation, infrastructure, and connectivity. The speed, precision, and comfort of the journey were a testament to China’s ability to push the boundaries of what is possible in transportation.

For the Pakistan Media Delegation, this journey was a highlight of our visit, offering a unique perspective on China’s rapid development. It was a chance to see firsthand the kind of technological advancements that have made China a leader in high-speed rail travel.

As we settled into our hotel in Shanghai later that evening, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and admiration for the country we were visiting. The journey from Beijing to Shanghai had given us a glimpse into the future of travel, one that is fast, efficient, and incredibly well-executed.

A Journey to Remember
The high-speed train ride from Beijing to Shanghai will undoubtedly remain one of the most memorable parts of our trip to China. It was an experience that blended the thrill of speed with the comfort of modern amenities, all while providing us with stunning views of China’s landscape. The journey was a fitting symbol of the strong and growing relationship between China and Pakistan, built on shared experiences, mutual respect, and a shared vision for the future.
