“Usama Mir is the Sole Pakistani Cricketer Selected in BBL Drafts”

Usama Mir has been selected by the Melbourne Stars in the third round of the Big Bash League (BBL) drafts. He also played for the franchise during the 2023-24 season. With the BBL scheduled to commence on December 15, 2024, and conclude on January 27, 2025, the league has prioritized foreign players who can commit to the entire season without complications related to No Objection Certificates (NOCs).

Pakistan’s cricketers face challenges with league participation due to their national team duties, which can often lead to uncertainties concerning NOCs.

In the draft, first-round picks included Ben Duckett (Melbourne Stars), James Vince (Sydney Sixers — retention), Laurie Evans (Melbourne Renegades), Lockie Ferguson (Sydney Thunder), Shai Hope (Hobart Hurricanes), Jamie Overton (Adelaide Strikers — retention), Colin Munro (Brisbane Heat — pre-signed player), and Finn Allen (Perth Scorchers — pre-signed player).

Second-round selections featured Tom Curran (Melbourne Stars — pre-signed player), Jacob Bethell (Melbourne Renegades), Ollie Pope (Adelaide Strikers — pre-signed player), Chris Jordan (Hobart Hurricanes — pre-signed player), Sam Billings (Sydney Thunder — pre-signed player), Paul Walter (Brisbane Heat), and Akeal Hosein (Sydney Sixers — pre-signed player), with the Perth Scorchers passing on their pick.

In the third round, Matthew Hurst (Perth Scorchers) was chosen, while Usama Mir (Melbourne Stars) was also picked. Other notable picks included Fabian Allen (Adelaide Strikers) and Sherfane Rutherford (Sydney Thunder), with the Sydney Sixers, Brisbane Heat, and Hobart Hurricanes passing on their selections. Tim Seifert (Melbourne Renegades — pre-signed player) rounded out the third-round picks.

The fourth round saw Rishad Hossain (Hobart Hurricanes), Tom Alsop (Brisbane Heat), Keaton Jennings (Perth Scorchers), and Jafer Chohan (Sydney Sixers) selected, while the Melbourne Stars, Melbourne Renegades, and Sydney Thunder passed on their picks.
