3 Martyred as Terrorists Target Police Checkpoint in Khyber

On Wednesday, a tragic incident unfolded in the Charwazagai area of Khyber district, where terrorists targeted a police checkpoint, resulting in the martyrdom of at least two police personnel and one civilian. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police confirmed the attack, stating that the terrorists launched a gun assault at the checkpoint situated on the Pak-Afghan highway near the Landi Kotal Bazar.

The fallen included Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Alamzeb. Additionally, the attack injured another police officer and a civilian. Both the martyred and injured were initially rushed to Landi Kotal Hospital for immediate medical attention but were later transferred to Hayatabad Medical Complex in Peshawar due to the severity of their conditions.

Following the assault, the assailants managed to flee the scene. The checkpoint, which was the target of the attack, is located three kilometers from the Landi Kotal Bazar.

In response to the attack, District Police Officer (DPO) Saleem Abbas reported that security measures have been heightened throughout the district. This incident occurs amidst a surge in terrorist activities in Pakistan, particularly affecting the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan provinces.

According to the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) Annual Security report, the second quarter of 2024 saw 380 violence-related fatalities and 220 injuries in Pakistan. These figures include casualties among civilians, security personnel, and outlaws, stemming from 240 incidents of terror attacks and counter-terror operations. KP and Balochistan, both bordering Afghanistan, have borne the brunt of these attacks, accounting for 92% of all fatalities and 87% of attacks nationwide. KP alone reported 67% of all fatalities, while Balochistan accounted for 25%.

In light of the escalating terrorist threat, the federal government last month launched “Azm-e-Istehkam,” a strategic campaign aimed at countering terrorism and cross-border infiltration. This renewed national anti-terror drive is part of the National Action Plan, demonstrating Pakistan’s commitment to addressing and mitigating the threat of terrorism.
